Jim Reed Chevrolet was one of the morethan 1,00p0 GM dealerships to receive letters in May tellinbg owners that their contractw with the struggling automakerd would not be renewedd in 2010, according to area dealers and others familiare with the situation. With its recognizable Chevyland billboard and waving cowboy thatbeckons passers-by, Jim Reed Chevrolet occupies more than 600,000 square feet along Broadway. Jim Reed operation also includeother non-GM vehicle brands, including Subaru and Isuzu. General Manager John Reed did not responcd to requests for an intervieww Mondayand Tuesday. was created in 1930 by Jim Reed Jr.
, who had sold Chevroletas and other cars prior to foundingthe company, accordinhg to the dealership’s Web Jim Reed III became president of the companh in 1958, though his father continued to be involvecd with the operations until his deatb in 1978. Jim Reed IV and John both sons of JimReed III, joinexd the operation in the 1970s and Chevrolet of Smyrna, which was already in bankruptc when GM sent the letters, is the only Nashvillew area GM dealership to have confirmed the automaker was terminatinb its dealership agreement. GM sent letters to aboutt 1,100 U.S. dealers telling them their franchisesagreements won't be renewed when they expire in 2010.
The letterxs outlined a dealership's deficiencies and detail how it faileds to meet the requirementsof GM’s salexs and service agreements. The move was part of GM’d plan to cut its dealer networkby 2,6090 locations, or 40 percent, by the end of 2010.
